A Message from Executive Director Bob Harlan
This is an exciting chapter in the 47 year history of the Yuba-Sutter-Colusa United Way as we introduce a new facet of giving and, likewise, a new facet of building a stronger community.
Since our inception, the Yuba-Sutter-Colusa United Way has been a vehicle for charitable giving in our area and an organization looking to better the lives of our citizens through special events such as food drives, turkey drives and community fairs showcasing dozens of non-profit organizations.
We also field phone calls every day from individuals looking for information about services and programs available to assist them concerning a variety of issues.
Up until now, the Yuba-Sutter-Colusa United Way has raised monies to distribute each Spring through our “allocations process,” and also accepted designations to non-profit organizations serving the region.
A few years ago, United Way agencies throughout the world began introducing the “Community Impact Model,” where a specific issue is addressed through advocacy, collaboration and raising funds to be distributed to non-profit organizations helping to fill that specific need.
Yuba-Sutter-Colusa United Way did extensive research regarding which issues are of highest concern. The top concerns were: “Healthier Children;” “The Aging Population;” and “Community Homelessness.” We decided to begin our Community Impact Model with “Healthier Children.”
Thus, our focus for these first funding cycles will involve extensive fundraising through talking with businesses and individuals and conducting fundraisers. The first Community Impact Grants were awarded in March of 2015.
