The Yuba-Sutter-Colusa United Way gives two annual awards to deserving community members or local businesses; the “NANCY FERREIRA LEADERSHIP AWARD”; and the "PEDRO AWARD."
The "Nancy Ferreira Leadership Award" recognizes an individual or organization most significantly contributing to the Yuba-Sutter-Colusa United Way. This honor is named after Nancy Ferreira, a long-time executive director for Yuba-Sutter-Colusa United Way whose spirit, actions, values, efforts and dedication immensely benefited the citizens of Yuba, Sutter and Colusa counties.
The "Pedro Award" is given to an individual who is willing to help his/her fellowman without thought of personal gain. This is the Yuba-Sutter-Colusa United Way’s most prestigious local award. Forty-eight years ago, the Yuba-Sutter-Colusa United Way began to receive a modest monthly contribution paid in cash, with a note stating, “TO HELP OTHERS” signed “PEDRO.” A year later it was decided to borrow the Pedro name for a very special Yuba-Sutter-Colusa United Way Award, this being the only award of its kind, recognizing an individual’s lifetime of caring for others.
The awards are given out Yuba-Sutter-Colusa United Way’s "Celebration of Service and Awards Breakfast" held in August each year.
ESTABLISHED JUNE 1999
In 1999, the Yuba-Sutter-Colusa United Way established the Nancy Ferreira Leadership Award in memory of the exemplary leader whose spirit, actions, values, efforts and dedication immensely benefited the citizens of the Yuba, Sutter and Colusa area. Nancy Ferreira symbolizes the tireless efforts of individuals who devote their lives to building a community that has resources to meet all of the needs of our diverse population. Nominees must have spent a good portion of their adult lives engaged in community programs and activities that benefit the citizens of the Yuba, Sutter and Colusa area. They should be persons exhibiting community service above and beyond other individuals in the community. The Nancy Ferreira Award recognizes the kind of leadership that fosters an atmosphere of confidence and trust in the Yuba, Sutter and Colusa community.
