VOLUNTEERISM
SURPRISING BENEFIT
More than one in four Americans volunteer on a regular basis. Nationally, the economic value of that activity is estimated to approach $6 billion annually. Why do so many Americans give of their time and resources?
The potential benefits of volunteering can be significant. Being part of a volunteer program or organization can keep you connected with other individuals and build lasting social, professional, and spiritual relationships. Volunteerism also comes with another benefit - better health.
Some reports suggest that volunteering (particularly in older adults) can lead to lower mortality rates. It’s amazing how much healthier you are when you feel happy, fulfilled and are looking to the future with optimism.
Volunteering can be a good way to reduce stress. According to the Mayo Clinic, stress can cause anxiety, depression, digestive problems, heart disease, weight gain, and memory impairment as well as other health ailments. Find a cause you are passionate about and dive in. It can be a great way to get a break from the daily tension associated with raising a busy family and/or a demanding career.
Being part of a worthwhile community cause can foster confidence and character building in both adults and children. Some studies have shown children who volunteer have higher graduation rates, are less likely to develop drug and substance abuse issues and are more likely to cultivate productive and happy families.
Volunteering is also a great way to form bonds with your neighbors and community - think Neighborhood Watch Programs or community gardens and beautification projects.
Below are some additional benefits of volunteering:
- A way to gain experience and insight into a career
- A way to network with like-minded people
- A way to give back to the community
- A way to initiate meaningful change in your part of the world
- A way to participate in your child’s education or sports program
- A way to meet new people and develop new social contacts (make new friends)
- A way to feel productive and part of a worthwhile cause
- A way to increase your confidence and social skills
- A way to raise self-esteem and feel content and productive
When considering where to volunteer, keep in mind that the more passion you have in a subject, the more enjoyable and rewarding the experience likely will be. Match your passion with your skill-set and you’ll be off to a good start. The benefit to you just might be a longer happier life and better health.
